Agartala, 31st July 2026 : Residents of Arjita Palli area under Jogendranagar in Agartala staged a protest on Friday, alleging an attempt to illegally occupy and sell a vacant plot of land where Durga Puja has been organised for nearly 25 years.
The locals alleged that two individuals, identified as Jiban Dey and Sujit Dutta, are trying to take control of the long-standing puja ground and sell the land despite the site being used by the community for decades. They claimed that no one had previously raised any ownership claim over the land.
The residents questioned the legal basis of the alleged sale, asking how ownership of the land was suddenly being claimed after so many years. They further alleged that the accused had earlier been involved in similar land-related activities in different areas, including garden house properties.
Representatives of around 200 families have submitted written complaints to the local administration, elected representatives, Ward No. 29 office and Booth No. 45, seeking intervention. However, they alleged that no action has been taken so far, raising concerns among residents.
The locals demanded that the puja ground be restored to its previous status and that a fair investigation be conducted into the matter. They warned that they would launch a larger movement if their demands were not addressed.
Residents also alleged that land-related activities by certain groups have created fear in areas including Jogendranagar and Anandnagar. They claimed that some land dealings were being carried out by obtaining documents through questionable means, and demanded strict action against those involved.
The allegations could not be independently verified. Authorities have not yet issued any official statement regarding the matter.
