IGM Casual Worker Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Gold Chain from Delivery Patient at GB Hospital: West OC Sanjit Sen

Date:

Agartala, 31st July 2026 : West Agartala Police have arrested a casual worker of IGM Hospital for allegedly stealing a gold chain worth around ₹1.54 lakh from a woman admitted for delivery.

Speaking to reporters, West Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sanjit Sen said that the complaint was lodged on Friday morning by Dharmendra Tripura. According to the complaint, his elder sister had been admitted to IGM Hospital on July 28 for delivery. As her labour pain intensified, doctors shifted her to the operation theatre and instructed that all ornaments be removed before the procedure.

Following the doctor’s advice, the patient removed her 6.33-gram gold chain with a locket and kept it inside her bag in the labour room. During this period, a casual worker entered the room along with the patient. Police alleged that after the patient was taken inside, the casual worker came out, took the chain from the bag and left the hospital premises.

The theft went unnoticed initially as the family remained occupied with the patient’s treatment. After realising the chain was missing and failing to locate the worker, the family approached West Agartala Police Station and lodged a formal complaint.

OC Sanjit Sen said a case was registered immediately, following which a police team led by Sub-Inspector Ranjit Das launched an investigation. Acting on specific information, the team intercepted the accused near IGM Chowmuhani while she was reportedly heading towards the hospital.

During interrogation, police found inconsistencies in her statements. A search of her bag, conducted in the presence of women police personnel, led to the recovery of the stolen gold chain and locket. The accused allegedly confessed that she had brought the jewellery to sell.

Police recovered the ornament, valued at approximately ₹1.54 lakh, arrested the accused, and initiated legal proceedings. She was produced before the court later in the day. The recovered gold chain has been returned to the victim’s family, police said.
