Agartala, 31st July 2026 : The Tripura Irregular Employees Forum on Friday observed a ‘Black Day’ across the state demanding regularisation of jobs, job security and equal pay for equal work. Irregular employees from various government departments participated in the protest by wearing black badges and covering their mouths with black cloth.
Speaking to the media, forum member Babul Acharya alleged that the policy introduced by the previous government for regularising irregular employees after completion of 10 years of service was scrapped after the change of government in 2018. He claimed that despite the passage of several years, no fresh regularisation policy has been introduced.
Acharya further alleged that before the 2018 Assembly elections, leaders of the present government had assured that irregular employees would be regularised within six months of coming to power. However, the promise has not been fulfilled even after a long period, he claimed.
According to the forum, more than 35,000 irregular and casual employees are currently working in different government departments across Tripura. Among them, around 9,500 employees are engaged in the Health Department.
Acharya, who has been working in the Health Department since 1998, said many employees are still receiving monthly salaries ranging between Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000, which is insufficient to manage household expenses amid rising inflation.
He appealed to Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha to take immediate steps regarding regularisation of irregular employees, ensuring job security, or implementing the principle of equal pay for equal work. He claimed that many employees have already retired without receiving recognition as permanent employees.
The Tripura Irregular Employees Forum stated that despite repeatedly raising their demands before successive governments, no permanent solution has been found. The forum urged the government to hold discussions and formulate a concrete policy to address the long-pending demands of irregular employees.
