Land Mafia Allegedly Targets Ashram Land in Badharghat; Police Complaint Filed

Date:

Agartala, 16th August 2026 :  Allegations of land-grabbing attempts by local land mafias have surfaced in South Badharghat, with the Ram Nibas Ashram now reportedly at the centre of the controversy. Members of the temple committee alleged that a large portion of the ashram’s land is being targeted for illegal occupation and sale.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, members of the temple committee said that Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi had donated around 22 kani of land for the Ram Nibas Ashram. They said that before her death, Kadambini Devi had also created a trust and made provisions to ensure that the property could not be sold under any circumstances.

However, over the past few days, a large portion of the temple property was allegedly fenced with tin sheets by some local land mafias. Later, members of the temple committee reportedly came to know through social media that attempts were being made to sell the land.

Following this, the temple committee lodged a complaint with the police and also informed the local MLA about the matter.

The committee members said that if the administration fails to take immediate and stringent action against those allegedly involved in the land-grabbing attempt, they will approach Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha seeking his intervention.

Meanwhile, allegations of increasing land-mafia activities in the Badharghat area have been raised for some time. Local residents claim that certain groups are allegedly operating by using the name of clubs and organisations. It has also been alleged that people trying to purchase land are being prevented from completing transactions unless they pay a fixed percentage of money.

Similarly, people selling land for medical treatment, loans or other urgent needs are allegedly being forced to pay a percentage to local groups. Residents claim that ordinary people are suffering but are reluctant to speak openly due to fear.
