Agartala, 17th August 2026 : An undertrial prisoner briefly escaped from police custody at the Agartala District and Sessions Court on Monday, triggering a security alert and a massive search operation within the court premises.
Reportedly, the court lock-up lacks adequate restroom facilities, forcing police personnel to take undertrial prisoners outside the lock-up when required. During one such movement on Monday, an undertrial prisoner allegedly managed to give the police the slip and flee.
Security personnel deployed at the court premises immediately launched a search. Additional police personnel were rushed to the spot from the local police station, and an intensive search operation was conducted across the court complex.
After some time, the prisoner was located and recaptured within the court premises.
Although the escape was short-lived, the incident has raised serious questions over security arrangements at the District and Sessions Court. The circumstances surrounding the prisoner’s movement outside the lock-up and the security measures in place during such transfers are now likely to come under scrutiny.
