Governor Nallu and Sudhangshu Das call for modern, scientific approach to pig farming

Date:

Agartala, 20th  August 2026 :  Tripura government is encouraging farmers to adopt scientific and modern techniques in pig farming to improve productivity and turn livestock rearing into a more profitable source of livelihood, Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das said on Thursday.

Das was speaking at a seminar and workshop on modern pig farming practices held at Pragya Bhavan. The programme was inaugurated by Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, who also visited the exhibition organised alongside the event and interacted with farmers, scientists and entrepreneurs.

Highlighting the potential of the sector, Governor Nallu said Tripura produces around 59.20 thousand metric tonnes of meat annually, while annual per capita consumption stands at about 14.15 kg. With pigs accounting for a substantial share of meat production, he said pig farming has an important role in strengthening the rural economy.

The Governor described progressive pig farmers as rural entrepreneurs and said the government is working to combine scientific knowledge, technology, financial support and farmers’ initiatives to increase productivity, raise incomes and generate employment.

Minister Sudhangshu Das highlighted various welfare and development schemes being implemented for livestock farmers and urged them to make greater use of scientific farming practices for sustainable returns.

The workshop was organised jointly under the aegis of the Department of Animal Resources Development, the All India Coordinated Research Project and the National Livestock Mission. Its theme was “Empowering Progressive Pig Farmers through Innovative and Scientific Technologies on Pig Farming.”

Experts at the programme discussed pig health and disease prevention, scientific breeding and feeding, animal nutrition, farm management and marketing strategies. An exhibition showcasing different aspects of pig farming and a documentary on advanced pig-rearing practices in Tripura were also featured.

Ten successful pig farmers were felicitated during the event. Progressive poultry farmers and other successful beneficiaries were also honoured for their achievements.

S. Prabhu, Special Secretary of the Animal Resources Development Department, delivered the welcome address, while department Director Dr. N. K. Chanchal delivered the vote of thanks.
