Date:

Agartala, 21st August 2026 :  Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha on Thursday stressed the need to expand opportunities for women’s education, skill development and economic self-reliance while ensuring their safety and protection.

Saha made the remarks while presiding over consecutive meetings with the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Tripura State Commission for Women at Conference Hall No. 1 of the Secretariat. He called for sustained awareness campaigns to protect the rights and well-being of women and children and to address issues such as child marriage, substance abuse and cyber safety.

The Chief Minister said lasting social change could not be achieved through administrative measures alone and called for efforts to change societal attitudes through continuous awareness-building. He suggested using creative mediums such as drama, along with seminars, workshops and other programmes, to spread awareness at the grassroots level.

Saha also emphasized identifying problems faced by women and children locally and providing counselling wherever required. He suggested involving prominent citizens, educationists, social workers, intellectuals and members of women’s self-help groups in awareness initiatives.

Discussing children living in care homes, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of ensuring their education, proper care and future economic independence through skill development and vocational training.

On women’s empowerment, he said education and skill training should be strengthened so that women can become economically self-reliant and participate more actively in the social and economic mainstream.

During the meeting, Special Secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department Tapan Kumar Das presented an overview of the Child Rights Commission’s activities, including school and home visits, counselling, child marriage prevention and awareness programmes. The State Commission for Women also presented its activities concerning women’s rights, safety and empowerment.
