Agartala, 29th August 2026: Anger is mounting among residents and vehicle drivers over the deplorable condition of the road connecting Ujan Pathalia Ghat to Guniraibari in the Jampuijala subdivision. Locals said the road has remained in a state of disrepair for nearly three years, causing severe hardship to commuters and farmers.
The road stretches from the National Highway near the 11 TSR Battalion headquarters at Bishramganj Dewan Bazar through Pathalia Ghat and Ujan Pathalia Ghat to Guniraibari. Large potholes have developed at several stretches, while rainwater frequently fills the craters, making parts of the road resemble ponds during the monsoon.
Residents said motorcycles, bicycles, auto-rickshaws and other vehicles struggle to negotiate the damaged stretches. They claimed that several accidents have occurred, leaving commuters injured. Pedestrians, particularly elderly people, also face difficulties walking along the road to reach markets, schools and colleges.
Students reportedly have to carry their shoes in their hands during the rainy season to avoid the muddy and waterlogged stretches. Farmers are also finding it difficult to transport agricultural produce to Bishramganj market. Auto-rickshaw drivers said the poor road condition has increased maintenance costs, with vehicles often requiring servicing every week.
According to residents, the issue has repeatedly been brought to the attention of the Jampuijala Block administration and the Takarjala PWD office, but no substantial action has been taken so far. Locals also expressed disappointment that newly elected MDC Buddhakumar Debbarma has not visited the area since the election.
Residents alleged that while road infrastructure in the plains has improved, development in the hilly areas remains inadequate. They appealed to both the state government and the ADC administration to take immediate steps to repair the road.
With village committee elections approaching, several elderly residents said candidates seeking votes would face questions from locals over the long-pending road repair. Some residents, however, expressed their views off-camera, citing concerns about appearing publicly before the media.
