Agartala, 30th August 2026 : Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday accused the ruling BJP of invoking the names of Bharat Mata and Lord Ram to justify attacks on Opposition party offices and the homes of political opponents, alleging that such actions reflect the ruling party’s “fear and insecurity”.
Chaudhury made the remarks while speaking at a blood donation camp organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Agartala.
Drawing a parallel with the political situation in Tripura during the period between 1988 and 1992, the CPI(M) leader alleged that the state was once again witnessing a crisis marked by attacks on democratic values and people’s voices.
Recalling the killing of educationist and public representative Dr Ajit Roy Chowdhury during that period, he said the DYFI’s blood donation initiative was an effort to stand with people and uphold humanity in the face of violence and injustice.
“This is what the Left Front stands for — bringing people together and standing beside them. The blood donated here will help patients irrespective of their political affiliation, including those associated with the BJP and RSS,” Chaudhury said.
He said the Left movement advocates national unity, protection of the Constitution, employment opportunities for young people and rights for farmers.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Chaudhury questioned the use of religious and nationalist slogans during attacks on Opposition supporters.
“Whenever we raise our voice, we are confronted with slogans invoking Bharat Mata and Lord Ram. But does Bharat Mata ask anyone to attack or vandalise a political party office? Does Lord Ram ask people to attack the homes of political opponents?” he questioned.
Referring to alleged attacks in Agartala, including in the Vidyasagar area, Chaudhury accused the ruling party of targeting Opposition supporters while using religious sentiments as a political shield. He also alleged irregularities involving donations collected in the name of the Ram Mandir and called for an investigation.
The CPI(M) leader further criticised the language allegedly used by ruling party leaders in the state Assembly and on social media in recent days, describing it as undemocratic and unacceptable.
Addressing party workers, he urged them not to be intimidated by attacks or political pressure.
“No matter how many attacks take place, do not bow your head. There is no question of retreat. Come out on the streets and continue to raise your voice,” Chaudhury said, expressing confidence that people who had earlier been misled would eventually turn against the BJP.
