Agartala, 31ST August 2026 : Three people were seriously injured in a road accident near Western Club on Akhaura Road in Agartala on Monday morning, triggering tension in the area after local residents alleged that the car was being driven by the daughter of a Tripura Police SP.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 9:30 am when a woman was allegedly learning to drive a vehicle bearing registration number TR 01 CL 0297, with a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel accompanying her. The car allegedly picked up speed and collided with a tom-tom (e-rickshaw), dragging it for nearly 100 metres.
The tom-tom driver, identified as Sanjib Sarkar of Dakshin Joynagar, and two passengers, including Ayesha Begum of Ichabazar, sustained serious injuries. Another woman passenger was also injured, but her identity could not immediately be ascertained. Sarkar reportedly suffered fractures to both legs and one hand.
Local residents informed the police and fire service personnel rescued the injured and shifted them to AGMC and GBP Hospital for treatment.
Tension escalated after police arrived at the spot. Locals alleged that a woman police constable, identified as Mandira Pal, attempted to move the woman allegedly driving the vehicle away from the accident site. Police subsequently detained the accompanying TSR personnel, identified as Sandip Kumar, a jawan of the 3rd Battalion of Tripura State Rifles, currently posted at AD Nagar and originally from Haryana.
Amid the tension, Sandip was allegedly assaulted by an agitated crowd before police intervened. The Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Sadar reached the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control.
Locals blocked the road and demanded the arrest of the alleged driver, insisting that no one should receive preferential treatment because of their official connections. Police officials assured the protesters that CCTV footage would be examined and appropriate legal action would be taken. They also reportedly said that police could initiate a case even if no formal complaint was filed by the victims or their families.
Following the assurance, police took the woman to the police station, after which the road blockade was withdrawn.
They demanded a proper investigation into the alleged misuse of government personnel and sought strict action if any violation of rules is established.
