Eight arrested in Swapna Foundation death case, police seek three-day remand

Date:

Agartala, 5th September 2026 :   Police have arrested eight persons, including the owner of the Swapna Foundation rehabilitation centre, in connection with the death of Tuhin Shubhra Bhattacharjee, who allegedly died after being assaulted at the facility in August 2026.

New Capital Complex Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Paritosh Das said the case was registered on August 16, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the deceased’s wife, Shahana Das Bhattacharjee. According to the complaint, Tuhin was allegedly beaten at Swapna Foundation and later succumbed to his injuries.

“Based on the complaint, we registered NCC PS Case No. 59/2026 under Sections 118(1) and 103(1) of the BNS. During the investigation, we arrested eight individuals against whom sufficient evidence has been gathered. The owner of Swapna Foundation is also among those arrested,” Das said.

The OC said the accused were produced before the court on Friday, where police sought three days’ remand for interrogation. Police have also approached the court seeking the addition of charges related to criminal conspiracy and extortion.

According to the investigation, Tuhin had been admitted to the rehabilitation centre on August 9, 2026. He was allegedly assaulted on August 15 and was subsequently taken to GB Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“We have obtained the post-mortem report and gathered sufficient evidence against the accused in connection with the case,” Das said.

He added that the arrested persons would be taken into police custody for detailed interrogation, which police believe could help establish the circumstances surrounding the assault and uncover further details of the alleged offence.

The case has now taken a significant turn with the arrest of eight accused persons, while police are continuing their investigation into the alleged assault, conspiracy and extortion aspects.
