Agartala, 8th September 2026 : In a strong message against violations of food safety regulations, the administration conducted a special joint enforcement drive across several sweet shops and hotels in the Udaipur subdivision of Gomati district on Tuesday.
The drive was carried out jointly by officials of the Health Department, Food Department and Legal Metrology Department, led by District Health Officer Dr. Shubhendu Debbarma. Surprise inspections were conducted at establishments in Gokulpur and Rajarbag.
Officials inspected three sweet shops in Gokulpur and another sweet shop and a hotel near the Rajarbag motor stand. During the inspections, several irregularities related to food safety and hygiene were detected.
According to officials, most of the sweet shops had failed to properly display the dates of manufacture and expiry on packaged food products. Poor hygiene was also observed in areas used for preparing and storing food. The inspection teams found sweets, chhana and curd stored in refrigerators under unhygienic conditions and seized several such food items.
The teams also reported inadequate cleanliness in sweet-making areas and hotel kitchens, along with the presence of stale food items. Allegations regarding the use of substandard or potentially harmful spices were also reported at some establishments.
In a separate action, a hotel in the Rajarbag area was temporarily shut down for allegedly operating without a valid food licence. Several gas cylinders were also confiscated over alleged illegal storage.
Dr. Shubhendu Debbarma said compliance with food safety regulations was mandatory for all food-related businesses. He stressed that protecting public health remained the administration’s foremost priority.
While businesses complying with the prescribed rules would receive the administration’s support, he made it clear that violations would not be tolerated. Fines have been imposed on owners of establishments where irregularities were detected.
The District Health Officer further said similar enforcement drives would continue across different parts of the Udaipur subdivision in the coming days, with stricter legal action likely against establishments found repeatedly violating food safety norms.
