Protecting forests us a collective duty: Animesh Debbarma at Forest Martyrs’ Day

Date:

Agartala, 11th September 2026 : Forest Martyrs’ Day was observed with due solemnity at Shalbagan Oxygen Park on Friday, paying tribute to forest personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty while protecting forests and wildlife.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma attended the programme and paid homage to the martyrs. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Debbarma said September 11 is observed across India as National Forest Martyrs’ Day to remember the supreme sacrifices made by forest personnel in the cause of forest conservation.

He recalled the historic Khejarli sacrifice in Rajasthan, where around 300 years ago, Amrita Devi Bishnoi and 363 others laid down their lives while resisting the felling of trees. He said the Government of India observes September 11 to commemorate their sacrifice.

The minister noted that several forest personnel from Tripura have also lost their lives while performing their duties. Their families were honoured during the programme, while tributes were paid to all forest martyrs from the state.

Debbarma stressed that protecting forests and trees is not the responsibility of the Forest Department alone but a collective duty of society. He said the department would continue its efforts to safeguard Tripura’s forests and urged citizens to actively participate in forest conservation.
