Agartala, 17th September 2026 : World Patient Safety Day 2026 was observed with due importance at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital on Thursday, September 17, with an emphasis on improving the quality of healthcare services and ensuring comprehensive patient safety.
The programme was organised at Lecture Hall-2 of the Academic Building at GBP Hospital from 1 pm under the initiative of the Medical Superintendent and Heads of Departments (HODs).
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Samarpita Dutta highlighted the importance of proper patient identification, accurate identification of patient samples, medication safety and surgical safety as essential components of quality healthcare.
Speaking on the occasion, HOD of the Department of Medicine Dr. Pradip Bhowmik said patient safety must be given the highest priority. He noted that even routine errors by healthcare workers can sometimes lead to complications for patients. He stressed the importance of correctly recording and identifying patients and accurately documenting the diagnosis. He also underlined the need for proper care and guidance at the time of discharge.
Dr. Bhowmik called for a collaborative approach among healthcare professionals, saying that instead of blaming one another when problems arise, staff should work together to identify and resolve issues.
Medical Superintendent and HOD of GBP Hospital Dr. Bidhan Goswami stressed the need for a change in the mindset of healthcare professionals. He called for moving away from rigid approaches and working as a coordinated team. He also emphasised proper monitoring of patients in intensive care units and ensuring timely treatment whenever required.
AGMC Principal Professor (Dr.) Tapan Majumdar stressed the importance of following standard guidelines for patient safety. He also highlighted the need for effective communication between healthcare providers and patients. He called for changes in practices and workplace culture that may directly or indirectly cause harm to patients.
Following the programme, Dr. Bishnu Goswami conducted a training session for doctors and nursing officers on patient safety.
Heads of various departments, senior resident officers, junior resident medical officers, resident medical officers, postgraduate doctors, the Nursing Superintendent, nursing officers and paramedical staff attended the programme.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Bishnu Goswami delivered the vote of thanks and urged all healthcare personnel to promote a culture of providing treatment with patient safety as the foremost priority.
