Agartala, 19th September 2026 : A driver was allegedly assaulted and tortured by a group of youths at Dashamighat in Agartala during idol immersion proceedings late Friday night, with his family accusing the secretary of a local club and others of being involved in the incident.
According to the injured driver’s family, Jalfu Miah, a resident of Charipara, had gone to Dashamighat around 10 pm on Friday to transport an idol for immersion. After unloading the idol, he was allegedly reversing his vehicle when it accidentally brushed against Mithun, identified by the family as the secretary of a local club.
The family alleged that following the incident, Jalfu was forcibly taken out of the vehicle and brought to the club premises. They claimed that several youths allegedly tied his hands and feet and assaulted him. The family further alleged that ₹5,000 in cash and his mobile phone were taken from him.
They also alleged that the accused pressured Jalfu to unlock his mobile phone. When he initially refused, he was allegedly beaten again, resulting in an injury to his arm. According to the family, the mobile phone was taken after he eventually unlocked it.
The family claimed that police later rescued Jalfu from the riverbank around 2 am in an unconscious condition. He was initially admitted to IGM Hospital in Agartala. As his condition reportedly deteriorated, he was shifted to TMC Hospital and later to GB Pant Hospital for further treatment.
On Saturday, members of the injured driver’s family approached West Agartala Police Station and lodged a complaint, seeking an investigation and legal action against those responsible. The family has also appealed to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha for justice.
The allegations are yet to be established through investigation. Police are expected to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident, identify those involved and determine the sequence of events. The response of the concerned club authorities or the persons named in the allegations was not immediately available.
