Agartala, 19th September 2026 : The TIPRA Motha Party has lodged a complaint with the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) over the alleged circulation of a manipulated video on social media, claiming that the content could mislead voters and create communal tension during the ongoing Village Council elections.
The complaint, submitted on behalf of TIPRA Motha General Secretary and Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, was delivered to the SEC by workers associated with Youth Tipra Federation President and District Council Member Suraj Debbarma.
In the complaint, Debbarma alleged that footage from a peaceful TIPRA Motha election campaign march had been edited and combined with audio taken from an unrelated protest programme. According to the party, the altered video gives the impression that provocative slogans were raised during a TIPRA Motha campaign event.
The party maintained that no slogans targeting any particular community were raised at its rallies, marches, meetings or other election programmes. It alleged that the circulation of the edited footage was intended to create a misleading narrative, damage the party’s image and disturb social harmony during the election period.
The complaint also referred to the party’s stated commitment to “Thansa,” or unity among communities in Tripura, under the leadership of its founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma.
Seeking immediate action, the party urged the SEC to identify the persons, political organisations or social media accounts involved in producing and circulating the alleged manipulated content.
It further requested the Commission to coordinate with law enforcement and cybercrime authorities to examine the matter and take appropriate legal action under applicable provisions. The party also sought steps to prevent the further circulation of the allegedly fabricated video and requested a public advisory against the use of manipulated media during the elections.
According to Debbarma, the party has submitted supporting digital material, including the original campaign footage, the audio allegedly taken from the unrelated protest and links to social media posts carrying the disputed video.
The party urged the SEC to examine the complaint promptly, stating that action against misleading digital content was necessary to safeguard the electoral process and maintain peace during the ongoing Village Council elections.
