Agartala, 25th September 2026 : Tripura Traffic Police has stepped up preparations to manage traffic and prevent congestion in Agartala during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.
Traffic Superintendent of Police Kanta Jangir said on Friday that vehicles with pending traffic challans will not be issued entry passes for designated no-entry areas during the Puja period. Around 16 lakh e-challans, involving unpaid fines of nearly Rs 160 crore, have been pending since 2020.
Last year, around 6,500 passes were issued. This year, the Traffic Police is also planning to introduce a fully digital system for issuing passes. Jangir warned that duplication or tampering with passes could lead to legal action, cancellation of the pass and a ban on obtaining passes in the future.
She said the pass system is mainly meant for emergency services and vehicles without valid passes will not be allowed into restricted areas.According to the Traffic Police, around Rs 20–30 crore is collected annually through traffic fines, while a large amount remains unpaid.
As part of the Puja traffic plan, no-entry restrictions will remain in force from 5 pm to 1 am from October 17 to 20 in several areas. Two new restricted stretches have also been added.Terminal points have been identified for buses, minibuses, jeeps, autos and light vehicles. Separate arrangements have been made for trucks and cargo vehicles, with restrictions from 5 pm to 6 am.
The department will install drop gates and CCTV cameras at important points and deploy additional personnel. Arrangements are also being made for emergency routes and parking facilities for airport and railway passengers.
