Agartala, 25th September 2026 : Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Friday highlighted the enduring historical and cultural significance of Vande Mataram, describing it as an inseparable part of India’s heritage and national identity rather than merely a song or literary composition.
He was speaking at the ‘Namami Bharatam Vande Mataram’ mass musical programme held at Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Town Hall in Agartala to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram. The programme was organised by Vidya Bharati Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan, New Delhi, in collaboration with Gandhigram Vidya Mandir.
Recalling the role of the composition during India’s freedom movement, the Governor said Vande Mataram had, over the past century and a half, crossed barriers of language, region, ethnicity and community. It eventually emerged as a powerful expression of the aspirations and patriotic sentiments of the people, he said.
Referring to Sri Aurobindo’s interpretation of Vande Mataram as a sacred call, Nallu said the composition had inspired generations of freedom fighters and strengthened their resolve to make sacrifices for the nation. He added that its influence had reached different parts of the country, including the diverse communities and regions of Tripura.
The Governor also praised the contribution of Vidya Bharati Shiksha Samiti, Tripura, to education and value-based development among young people. He said educational institutions have an important responsibility in cultivating cultural awareness, national consciousness and a spirit of service among students.
Nallu further appreciated the teachers, volunteers and members of Gandhigram Vidya Mandir for their efforts in education and social service. He noted that Tripura’s diversity of communities, languages, cultures and traditions makes value-based education particularly significant.
Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Debabrata Das also addressed the gathering. He said Vande Mataram continues to remain closely associated with the emotions and aspirations of Indians and stressed its relevance for the younger generation.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dhruba Mandal, Headmaster of Gandhigram Vidya Mandir. Prof. Dr Milan Rani Jamatia, President of Vidya Bharati, Tripura, delivered the vote of thanks.
Tandra Gan Chowdhury, President of the Managing Committee of Tripureshwari Vidya Mandir, Gandhigram; Dr Nilmani Chakraborty, State Coordinator of Vidya Bharati, Tripura; and Subhash Ganchowdhury, Secretary of Gandhigram Vidya Mandir, were among those present.
Students, teachers, volunteers, members and other guests attended the programme. A collective rendition of Vande Mataram formed the central highlight of the event as participants joined together to commemorate 150 years of the iconic composition.
