Agartala, 3rd October 2026 : . Tension surfaced in the Hirachara area of Kailashahar after three persons were detained by locals on allegations of stealing fish from a private fishery during the early hours of Saturday.
Local sources informed that eight fishermen from Chandipur had been engaged in fishing at different fisheries and ponds in and around northern Kailashahar with the permission of the owners. Under the arrangement, they were paid a portion of the catch, while the remaining fish was handed over to the fishery owners.
The group reportedly entered a large fishery at Hirachara around 3:50 am. When the owner arrived later, the fishermen allegedly claimed that the catch was low and handed over only a small quantity of fish, keeping some as their share.
The owner reportedly became suspicious because the quantity appeared disproportionately low considering the size of the fishery. Subsequently, suspicions arose over the bags and fishing nets kept inside the auto-rickshaw used by the group.
When the vehicle reached the Baburbazar area, locals reportedly stopped and checked it, allegedly finding a substantial quantity of fish in bags, said to have been caught using two nets.
Five of the fishermen allegedly fled with their bags, while locals detained the other three along with a bag containing fish. The auto-rickshaw and fishing nets were also handed over to the police.
Sources said the detained persons were not physically assaulted and were handed over to the authorities peacefully. Police are questioning the three detainees, while a search is underway for the five others.
The exact quantity of fish allegedly taken from the fishery and the individual roles of those involved will be established through the police investigation.
