Agartala, 8th October 2026 : The livestock sector is emerging as an important source of livelihood and economic empowerment in rural Tripura, with poultry, piggery, duck rearing and cattle farming creating opportunities for unemployed youth to attain financial independence, ARD Minister Sudhangshu Das said on Thursday.
Addressing the national conclave on “Livestock, Livelihoods and Women’s Economic Agency: Targeting the Most Vulnerable” at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala, Das said livestock activities have become an integral part of efforts to strengthen the state’s rural economy.
The conclave was jointly organised by the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) and The/Nudge Institute.
According to Das, the ARDD Department has a significant role in developing the agriculture and allied sectors and expanding livelihood opportunities in rural areas. He said a growing number of unemployed youths are becoming financially self-reliant by taking up livestock-related activities.
Highlighting the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the Minister said the scheme has provided another important avenue for unemployed youth to build sustainable sources of income. He expressed gratitude to the Government of India for its support through the programme.
Das also underlined the importance of the national conclave in sharing knowledge and experiences with people working at the grassroots level. He said MGNREGA workers, TRLM members and women engaged in livestock-related activities would benefit from the exchange of ideas and practices.
The Minister said such initiatives could help identify new ways to expand livestock-based livelihoods and further strengthen the rural economy, particularly by increasing the economic participation of women and vulnerable sections of society.
