Agartala, 8th October 2026 : A 17-year-old girl who allegedly escaped an attempted abduction and sexual assault in Kailashahar has accused personnel at the Kailashahar Women’s Police Station of further harassment and inappropriate conduct, triggering public concern over the handling of the case.
According to the complaint, the incident took place around 10 pm on Wednesday near the Sports Office at Gobindpur. The girl, daughter of a rickshaw puller, was returning home from her uncle’s residence when a youth allegedly approached her from behind, covered her mouth and attempted to abduct her.
The girl reportedly bit the youth’s hand and raised an alarm, following which local residents rushed to the spot. The accused allegedly fled into a newly constructed indoor stadium nearby, where residents and the girl chased and caught him. He was subsequently detained by locals.
Residents said they informed the Kailashahar Women’s Police Station at around 10:15 pm. However, despite the location being less than 700 metres from the police station, police allegedly reached the spot only around 11:40 pm.
The accused youth was then taken to the police station, while the girl and her parents submitted a written complaint. The girl and her family alleged that the Officer-in-Charge of the Women’s Police Station questioned her about why she was outside at such a late hour and allegedly suggested that she had made false allegations against the youth with the intention of demanding money.
The family further alleged that the OC initially refused to register the case, citing lack of evidence. Following the intervention of local journalists, who reached the station after being approached by the girl’s parents, the complaint was eventually registered as KLS/WPS/26/2026.
Police subsequently arranged a medical examination of the detained youth at Kailashahar Rajiv Gandhi Sub-Divisional Hospital. On Thursday afternoon, he was produced before the Kailashahar court. Police have invoked Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 8 of the POCSO Act.
Sources said the accused is reportedly from Rajasthan and had been working in Kailashahar for around two months as part of the construction work for the indoor stadium, particularly the badminton court. The stadium is reportedly scheduled to be inaugurated by Chief Minister later this month.
The allegations against the Women’s Police Station have sparked criticism among local residents, who questioned the delay in responding to a complaint involving a minor and the alleged conduct of police personnel while recording her complaint.
There are also allegations from some local women that the Officer-in-Charge has previously been reluctant to register complaints and has instead encouraged complainants to settle disputes outside the police station. Further allegations have also surfaced regarding demands for money in connection with registration of cases.
