Agartala, 8th October 2026 : With Durga Puja approaching, Tripura Police have rolled out a comprehensive security and traffic management plan aimed at maintaining law and order, managing large crowds and ensuring swift emergency response across the state.
DGP (in-charge) G.S. Rao, speaking at a press conference in the presence of senior police officials, IGs and Superintendents of Police from all eight districts, said security arrangements have been strengthened this year with increased deployment of personnel, surveillance infrastructure and mobile patrolling.
Rao said 2,905 Puja celebrations have been registered so far, against 2,928 last year, adding that the number may rise further as applications are still being received.
Police deployment is also expected to cross last year’s level. Around 10,000 Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and police personnel were deployed during last year’s festivities, while additional personnel will be deployed this year based on local requirements.
A major emphasis has been placed on surveillance and rapid mobility. Police will hire additional vehicles for mobile patrolling, while 180 CCTV cameras and 169 watchtowers are planned at strategic locations. In Agartala, 29 additional bike patrol teams have already been deployed in crowded areas in anticipation of increased shopping and festive activity.
The police have also identified extortion as an area requiring close attention. Rao said five extortion cases related to Puja activities have been registered this year, compared with two cases last year. He made it clear that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in extortion or other illegal activities.
With nearly 450 Puja celebrations expected in Agartala, traffic management has emerged as a key component of the security strategy. Authorities are preparing designated parking arrangements, no-entry zones, stopping restrictions and transport management measures to reduce congestion.
A green corridor for emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire-service vehicles, is also being planned to ensure that emergency services can move through congested areas without unnecessary delays.
During the specified Puja period, no-entry restrictions in Agartala will remain in force from 5 pm to 1 am. A dedicated traffic control room will function round the clock to monitor traffic and coordinate emergency responses.
Security measures have also been intensified at railway stations, with the SP, Government Railway Police (GRP), overseeing additional arrangements. Police personnel in plain clothes will be deployed at key locations to monitor suspicious movements and prevent criminal activities.
Rao said police officials have already held discussions with Puja committees and local police stations regarding law-and-order arrangements, volunteer deployment and other security requirements. Additional women police personnel will also be deployed, with their numbers expected to increase this year.
At the same time, police have intensified their anti-drug campaign across the state, with special attention being given to the Puja season to prevent drug-related activities and ensure a secure festive environment.
The DGP in-charge said the combined security, surveillance and traffic measures are intended to ensure that devotees can enjoy Durga Puja without disruption while maintaining public safety and smooth movement across the state.
