Agartala, 10th October 2026 : The CPI(M) East Agartala Area Committee organised its annual clothing distribution programme to extend support to underprivileged residents ahead of the autumn festival.
Amal Chakraborty, secretary of the CPI(M) Sadar Sub-Divisional Committee, attended the programme along with Sanjay Das, secretary of the party’s East Agartala Area Committee, and other local leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, Chakraborty said the initiative reflected the party’s commitment to standing by people in need. He noted that CPI(M) had been involved in various social activities, including blood donation camps and relief efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, besides its political programmes and protest movements.
He said the clothing distribution drive was aimed at helping economically disadvantaged people, particularly those without a regular source of income, so that they could receive some assistance during the festive season.
Chakraborty also expressed concern over the economic difficulties faced by ordinary people in Tripura. Although he said he did not wish to discuss politics during the festive period, he pointed to what he described as a decline in market activity and shopping, attributing the trend to a lack of employment and reduced purchasing power.
Criticising the state government, he alleged that adequate employment opportunities had not been created since it assumed office in 2018. He further claimed that work under MGNREGA and other employment schemes had become scarce and that workers often faced delays in receiving their wages.
Rising prices of essential commodities, including rice, sugar and pulses, were also a major concern, he said, alleging that the public distribution system had failed to provide adequate relief to the people.
Chakraborty said the clothing distribution programme was undertaken in view of these economic challenges, with the aim of extending a helping hand to vulnerable sections of society during the festive period.
