Agartala, 16th October 2026 : Tripura is set to receive its first-ever Kanda Express consignment, with around 440 metric tonnes of onions expected to arrive in Agartala by October 18, 2026. The initiative, undertaken by the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF), is aimed at ensuring adequate supplies and keeping onion prices under control during the festive season.
The introduction of the dedicated rail service marks an important development in the Centre’s efforts to expand the distribution of buffer-stock onions across the North-Eastern region. After extending the Kanda Express service to Assam, the latest move brings Tripura into the rail-based supply network, strengthening the transportation of this essential commodity to the state.
The consignment is expected to improve onion availability in seven districts of Tripura — Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati and Sepahijala. The initiative is also expected to reinforce existing supply channels by combining rail transportation with road-based distribution to reach key markets and consumption centres.
Officials said that more than 2,800 MT of buffer-stock onions have already been dispatched to different parts of the North-East through two Kanda Express rakes and 44 truck consignments. The expanded transportation network is intended to improve regional supply coverage and help moderate prices amid increased demand during the festive period.
At the national level, wholesale onion prices have begun to ease with the arrival of fresh Kharif produce in mandis. The all-India average mandi price, which reached around Rs 3,600 per quintal in September, has declined to approximately Rs 3,300 per quintal in October.
The arrival of the first Kanda Express in Agartala is expected to provide an additional boost to Tripura’s onion supply system. The move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve the availability of essential food commodities, strengthen distribution in the North-East and protect consumers from sharp price fluctuations during periods of heightened demand.
