Agartala Press Club condemns attack on photojournalist, demands arrest of accused

Date:

Agartala, 22nd October 2026 : The Agartala Press Club has strongly condemned the alleged assault on photojournalist Abhijit Bhattacharjee, a member of the club, and his son near Yuba Sangha Club on Ramnagar Road No. 1 in Agartala late on the night of October 20. The club has demanded the immediate identification and arrest of all those involved in the incident.

According to the complaint lodged at West Agartala Police Station, the incident took place at around 1:10 am when a social gathering was underway at Yuba Sangha Club. Although a portion of the road was reportedly clear, bamboo poles had been placed to block the passage.

After his wife and son had crossed the stretch, Bhattacharjee allegedly attempted to move a bamboo pole aside to proceed on his motorcycle. Several local youths reportedly began abusing him before physically assaulting him.

When his son attempted to record the incident on his mobile phone, the alleged assailants snatched the device, threw it onto the road and smashed it. The son was also allegedly assaulted during the incident.

Both father and son sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement, the Agartala Press Club expressed serious concern over the incident and called for swift police action against those responsible. The club also raised concerns over the reported filing of a case against the journalist, who was himself allegedly assaulted along with his son.

The Press Club has demanded that CCTV footage from the area be secured immediately to establish the sequence of events and identify the actual perpetrators. It also urged the police to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay.

A case has been registered at West Agartala Police Station in connection with the incident.
