Agartala, March 28, 2023: Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday said that necessary steps will be taken for conservation of medicinal plants and Bison animal at Trishna Wildlife sanctuary.

On the third day of the 13th state legislative assembly, BJP MLA Swapna Majumder of Rajnagar assembly constituency brought a reference period notice asking that what necessary measures have been initiated by the state government to make the ‘Trishna’ Sanctuary more attractive.

In reply to the reference, CM Dr Saha said that the ‘Trishna’ Sanctuary has about 230 species of trees, 400 species of herbs, 110 species of shrubs and 150 species of vines. This includes a repository of medicinal plants and Bison is the main species of ‘Trishna’ Wildlife Sanctuary. Apart from this, there are owls, cap monkeys, shy monkeys, pig-tailed monkeys, wild boars, wild cats, leopard cats, etc. in this sanctuary.

“Cluster of measures to make Trishna Sanctuary attractive to visitors in Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, Bharat Bangladesh Maitri Udyan, Baradaus Eco-Park and Jaichandpur Eco-Tourism Zone have been identified as significant potential destinations. Moreover, the rest house at Rajnagar will be further equipped to meet the needs of visitors to the wildlife sanctuary”, he added.

Raising a point of clarification Rajnagar’s BJP MLA Majumder said “There is Bison National Park under Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary. The barbed-wire fence constructed were lower in altitude and hence, a bison animal jumped over it. The Forest department officials searched for it day and night and rescued it after 7 days.” Hence, she sought the government to increase the altitude of barbed-wire fence, so that the Bisons cannot jump over it.

Meanwhile, leader of opposition and TIPRA Motha MLA Animesh Debbarma in a point of clarification said ‘Trishna’ Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best tourist spots in the state. He asked the government whether the sanctuary is making any profit or not? It is not fruitful if there is no profit after investing on it.

In reply to Majumder and Debbarma’s clarifications, CM Dr Saha said “We all are well aware about what a sanctuary is. There are scientific ways to deal with the situations and officials will examine what possible ways are available for employment generation.”
