Elderly Father Allegedly Left in Inhumane Conditions by Government Teacher Son in Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 27th October 2026 : In a disturbing case that has reportedly sparked anger among local residents, an elderly man, Sukumar Debnath, is allegedly living in extremely poor conditions in the North Mura area under Aralia Gram Panchayat in Charilam block, with accusations that his government-employed teacher son and daughter-in-law have failed to provide him with proper food and care.

According to the allegations, Sukumar has been confined to a dilapidated room that residents say is in worse condition than a cattle shed. The room reportedly has no electricity or fan, making it difficult for the elderly man to sleep comfortably, particularly in hot weather.

Locals claim that the elderly man receives neither financial assistance nor regular food from his son, Titen Debnath, a government graduate teacher at Ailmara High School under the jurisdiction of the Silachari School Inspector, and his daughter-in-law, Pompa Debnath, a government graduate teacher at Jirania High School.

According to residents, Sukumar is forced to prepare a meal for himself by lighting a fire, despite his advanced age and difficult living conditions. The allegations have triggered resentment in the village, with locals expressing concern over the treatment of an elderly parent who, they say, deserves care and dignity in his old age.

The incident has also raised questions about the responsibilities of individuals working in the education sector. Teachers are widely regarded as role models who help shape society and instil moral values in younger generations. Residents have questioned how educators can fulfil that social responsibility if allegations of neglect towards their own parents are true.

Villagers have expressed disappointment over the alleged contrast between the living conditions of the elderly man and those reportedly enjoyed by his son and daughter-in-law. They have called attention to the need for elderly parents to receive proper care, food and shelter.

The allegations, however, require verification from the concerned individuals and authorities. No response from the son or daughter-in-law was available in the information provided.

The incident has brought the issue of elderly care and family responsibility into focus, with residents hoping that the matter will receive attention and that the elderly man will be able to live with dignity and security.
