Two blocks of Agartala Light House Project inaugurated, 278 families to benefit

Date:

Agartala, 29th October 2026 : The long-awaited Light House Project in Agartala reached a major milestone on Wednesday with the inauguration of Blocks A and F, paving the way for eligible families to move into modern and affordable homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha inaugurated the two blocks, while Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal joined the programme virtually as the chief guest. The project has been undertaken by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Global Housing Technology Challenge-India initiative.

Addressing the gathering, Saha said the project would help economically weaker sections and low-income families realise their dream of owning permanent homes. He noted that 278 housing units had been inaugurated and keys were handed over to beneficiaries during the programme.

The project aims to provide housing to 1,022 families at an estimated cost of Rs 162.5 crore. Each flat covers 30 square metres, equivalent to around 320 square feet, and has been constructed using modern building technology designed to ensure durability, quality and sustainability.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the project had encountered difficulties during its initial stages, particularly over the requirement for piling work, which had not been properly accounted for in the original Detailed Project Report. He said repeated discussions with the Union Minister and concerned authorities helped overcome the obstacles.

Emphasising the need for speedy execution, Saha urged the implementing agency and officials to expedite construction of the remaining blocks and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.

He said the housing complex would bring lasting changes to beneficiaries’ lives by providing security, dignity and an improved living environment. Saha also appealed to residents to maintain the premises and help develop the complex into a clean and pleasant residential neighbourhood.

The Agartala project is part of a national initiative covering six cities, including Ranchi, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot and Chennai. The Chief Minister said the initiative reflected the Centre and state’s efforts to expand access to affordable housing through modern construction methods.]
