Tension Grips Khowai Over Alleged Obstruction of Nomination Filing; Left Parties Stage Protest

Date:

Agartala, 2nd November 2026 :  Political tensions mounted in Khowai on Monday amid allegations by Left leaders and supporters that opposition candidates were being obstructed from filing nomination papers for the upcoming municipal council elections.

Protesting what they described as attempts to undermine the democratic process, Left party workers organised a demonstration march through Khowai town before staging a road blockade at Nipen Avenue. The protest brought the alleged obstruction of opposition candidates into the spotlight as the nomination process for the civic polls continued.

Left leaders accused the ruling party of creating hurdles for opposition candidates seeking to submit their nomination papers. They further alleged that groups of motorcycle-borne supporters associated with the ruling party were being used to intimidate opposition workers and disrupt the electoral process.

The allegations, raised by Left leaders and activists, prompted them to take to the streets, demanding that all candidates be allowed to participate in the election without intimidation or interference.

The protest began in the morning, with demonstrators marching through the town and raising slogans against the alleged attempts to prevent opposition candidates from filing their nominations. The protesters called for the protection of democratic rights and demanded an atmosphere conducive to free and fair elections.

The agitation subsequently reached Nipen Avenue, where the demonstrators blocked the road as part of their protest. The blockade added to the political tension in the town, drawing attention to the growing confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of the municipal elections.

The alleged obstruction of nomination filing has emerged as a contentious issue in Khowai, with the Left parties expressing concern over the conduct of the electoral process. They maintained that candidates must be given an equal opportunity to contest the polls without facing pressure or obstruction.

With political parties intensifying their activities ahead of the civic elections, the developments in Khowai have raised questions about the atmosphere surrounding the nomination process. Attention is now focused on the response of the election authorities and whether adequate steps will be taken to ensure that candidates can exercise their democratic rights freely.

The allegations against the ruling party could not be independently verified.
