Agartala, 2nd November 2026 : South Tripura has emerged as a frontrunner in Tripura’s fight against HIV/AIDS, becoming the first district in the state to secure the prestigious ‘Surakshit District’ recognition under the National AIDS Control Organisation’s (NACO) Mission AIDS Suraksha initiative.
The recognition highlights the district’s progress in strengthening HIV prevention, early detection, treatment facilities and community awareness through coordinated interventions involving government agencies and civil society organisations.
The achievement also reflects progress towards the ambitious UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, which seek to ensure that 95 per cent of people living with HIV are aware of their status, 95 per cent of diagnosed individuals receive antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95 per cent of those undergoing treatment achieve viral suppression. These targets form a crucial part of the global effort to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Officials attributed the milestone to the collective contribution of National AIDS Control Programme personnel, NGOs, healthcare workers, the district administration and other stakeholders.
South Tripura District Magistrate Muhammad Sajjad P, IAS, provided administrative leadership and coordination, while Chief Medical Officer Dr J M Das guided healthcare-related interventions. District AIDS Control Officer Dr Manish Chowdhury played a key role in implementing and monitoring the programme.
The Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS) also provided continuous technical guidance and institutional support.
The achievement has drawn appreciation from officials and stakeholders, who acknowledged the dedication of healthcare personnel, programme workers and partner organisations.
The recognition is expected to encourage other districts to intensify their HIV/AIDS control initiatives, while South Tripura continues to focus on awareness generation, preventive healthcare, accessible treatment and support for people living with HIV.
