Left Front alleges obstruction in nomination filing at Jirania, Seeks DM’s intervention

Date:

Agartala, 2nd November 2026 : Alleging obstruction and attacks on party workers while attempting to file nomination papers in different areas of West Tripura district, CPI(M) leaders and supporters on Monday submitted a deputation to the West Tripura District Magistrate in Agartala, demanding administrative intervention and security for candidates.

The deputation followed allegations that CPI(M) workers and supporters were prevented from proceeding with the nomination-filing process in Jirania, Ranirbazar and Mohanpur. Several senior Left leaders, including Shankar Prasad Datta, Manik Dey and Tapan Das, participated in the programme.

Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) state committee member Ratan Das alleged that despite prior communication with the district administration regarding the proposed nomination filing, adequate security arrangements had not been made. He said Left Front candidates intended to submit their nomination papers simultaneously at Ranirbazar, Jirania and Mohanpur at 10:30 AM on Tuesday.

Das questioned the administration’s ability to ensure a safe environment for candidates contesting against the ruling BJP, irrespective of their political affiliation. He also alleged that roads had been blocked using a JCB machine and that individuals carrying sticks and other weapons were present near the nomination-related premises.

CITU state general secretary and former MP Shankar Prasad Datta alleged that around 15 people were severely beaten when candidates and supporters gathered at Fatikchhara to proceed towards the SDM office in Mohanpur. According to him, two injured persons were hospitalised, while some of the victims were above 70 and even 80 years of age.

Datta said the Left leaders approached the District Magistrate seeking accountability and intervention, questioning whether candidates could exercise their democratic rights without intimidation.

The Left leaders strongly condemned the alleged incidents and urged the district administration and police to ensure security so that all political parties could participate in the nomination process without obstruction.
