Two arrested in Smart City CCTV battery theft case in Agartala

Date:

Agartala, 4th November 2026 : East Agartala police have arrested two persons in connection with a series of thefts involving batteries installed for the Smart City project’s CCTV surveillance network across Agartala. The arrests were made by a police team led by Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar from Camper Bazar.

According to police, batteries powering CCTV cameras at different locations in the city have been stolen over the past seven to eight days. Following the incidents, an official associated with the Smart City project, based at Indranagar, lodged a formal complaint with East Agartala police station. Subsequently, a case was registered under FIR No. 168/2026.

Acting on intelligence inputs and information gathered from confidential sources, police tracked down and arrested the two accused at Camper Bazar. During interrogation, investigators recovered an auto-rickshaw allegedly used to transport the stolen batteries.

Police found discrepancies in the vehicle’s registration numbers, with TR01E 2949 displayed on its front while TR07 2430 was affixed to the rear. The accused were also reportedly identified through CCTV footage showing them allegedly stealing batteries under the cover of darkness.

Briefing the media, OC Krishnadhan Sarkar said the arrested duo had links to at least three previous theft cases, including one in which a charge sheet had already been submitted at East Agartala police station. Their alleged involvement in cases registered under West Agartala and Amtali police stations has also come under investigation.

Police further revealed that at least 20 to 25 additional batteries are suspected to have been stolen. One of the reported theft incidents took place at Abhaynagar, falling under East Agartala police station’s jurisdiction, approximately a week ago.

The police are planning to seek remand of the arrested persons for further interrogation and to recover the remaining stolen batteries. Investigators are also examining other theft incidents reported from different locations and at different times.
