Agartala, 5th November 2026 : The Tripura Congress has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led government ahead of the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, alleging that the ruling party failed to address Agartala’s basic civic problems during its five years in power.
Senior Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman and Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha accused the government of neglecting roads, drinking water, pollution control, cleanliness and other essential civic services.
Speaking to the media, Roy Barman said the Congress would focus on issues affecting people’s daily lives, including poor road conditions, contaminated drinking water, deteriorating air quality and the mosquito menace. He urged residents to check the Air Quality Index (AQI), alleging that people were being forced to breathe polluted air and consume unsafe water.
He also warned the ruling party against relying on money power, muscle power or intimidation to win the elections. Roy Barman said people would respond through their votes and protect democracy.
Meanwhile, Ashish Kumar Saha said the Congress would contest all 51 wards. He announced that the party would submit nominations in 50 wards on the day, while the remaining nomination would be filed the following day due to documentation-related issues.
Saha alleged that the government had failed to implement a proper master plan for Agartala and claimed that the Smart City project had not delivered the expected results.
He said the Congress would promise relief from increased property taxes and water charges, along with improvements in drinking water supply, environmental management and civic infrastructure. The party is seeking public support by highlighting what it described as the government’s failures in urban development.
