Agartala: May 19 : Agartala Municipal Corporation took action against illegal encroachments on the road from GB to Indranagar by demolishing shops and houses.
Complaints had been lodged regarding unscrupulous traders and permanent residents constructing unauthorized structures in the area.
MLA Sudip Roy Barman was informed, but no cooperation was received. Subsequently, a local club sought assistance from the GB Police outpost to address the issue.
The AMC became aware of the matter on Friday morning and proceeded to demolish the illegally constructed structures with bulldozers. However, local residents expressed anger, claiming they were not given any notice as required by administrative rules. They stated that the corporation initiated the operation without prior notification, resulting in significant losses for those whose houses and shops were demolished.
A woman from the area recounted how corporation officials abruptly ordered workers to demolish their properties, disregarding their request for a two-day delay.
“When asked for two days time, the official did not want to listen in any way. Under the leadership of the official, the workers became overzealous and vandalized our houses and shops”, the victim said.
Meanwhile, Mayor Dipak Majumder said that many times notices have been given to those occupying the roads illegally in the area and the Corporation has directly asked them to vacate their encroachments. But they did not move.
“Now the allegation raised on their behalf is completely false. The corporation authorities are committed to the citizens of Agartala to make it a traffic free city from the very beginning”, he said.
But when the locals got agitated, paramilitary forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. Many houses were demolished in the raid.
