City submerges due to torrential rain, Mayor visits affected areas

Agartala: Aug 06. Agartala city faced severe inundation as torrential rain hit the state, causing widespread water logging in various areas.

Major thoroughfares, including Shakuntala Road, Rabindra Bhavan, East Agartala PS area, Paradise Choumuhani, Ganaraj Choumuhani, Orient Choumuhani, IGM Hospital, and City Center premises, were submerged, leaving pedestrians stranded and vehicles damaged.

Despite the establishment of the present government and the Agartala Municipal Corporation, the city’s urban development department has failed to address the recurring flood issues, even after installing the water pump machine. The situation has worsened as the drainage system remains clogged, and drains are not cleaned on time. Excessive plastic usage has also contributed to the drainage system’s impairment.

The suffering of city dwellers continues to persist, with residents living next to city roads facing the brunt of the waterlogging, as drain water has started entering their houses. The broken promises of the BJP-run AMC have left citizens disillusioned, with the drainage system improvements falling short of expectations.

Amidst the chaos, workers operating the water pump machine claimed that it could control water accumulation within two to two and a half hours. To mitigate the flooding, arrangements were made to pass water through the Howrah Canal, providing some relief to the city dwellers.

Mayor, Dipak Majumder, visited the city in the evening, asserting that significant improvements have been made to the drainage system. He claimed that the collaboration between corporations and the government has led to cleaner drains, resulting in the water not accumulating anywhere for more than an hour. The mayor also stated that no houses were affected by the recent floods.
