Melaghar businessman stabbed to death by minor over money dispute

Agartala, September 17, 2023: A 52-year-old businessman named Biswajit Debnath was stabbed to death by a 16-year-old student at his xerox shop in Melaghar Netaji Chowmuni on Sunday afternoon. The incident sparked tension in the area and the accused was arrested by the police.

According to the police, the student had gone to the MRS Xerox shop owned by Debnath to make a xerox and paid him with a Rs 500 note. Debnath later noticed that Rs 2500 were missing from his cash box and accused the student of stealing the money. A heated argument ensued between them and the student took out a knife from his school bag and attacked Debnath on his back and head.

The student then tried to flee but was caught by other traders at Melaghar Madhya Bazar. The police reached the spot and rescued the student from the angry mob. Debnath was rushed to Melaghar Hospital where he was referred to Agartala GB Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The police have registered a case of murder against the student and are investigating the matter further. The motive behind the crime is yet to be ascertained. The student’s family has claimed that he is innocent and that he acted in self-defense.
