Agartala, September 20, 2023: The Melaghar Merchants Association, in a resolute demonstration of solidarity, orchestrated a silent march and delegation to the local police station to decry the heinous murder of Biswajit Debnath, a well-known businessman within the Melaghar Bazar, and to advocate for a drug-free society.

On this impactful day, traders from the bustling Melaghar market convened for a mass procession that commenced from Melaghar market itself, culminating in a gathering at the doorstep of the Melaghar police station. At this juncture, the special representatives of the Melaghar Merchants’ Association presented a comprehensive memorandum to the officers at the Melaghar police station, outlining a series of five vital demands.

Central to their demands is an urgent call to halt the sale of intoxicating substances within the various Chowmuhanis and shops scattered across the Melaghar market. The traders are also pressing for the identification and punitive action against drug dealers who have plagued the locality. Ensuring adequate security measures within the market vicinity is another paramount demand.

The backdrop to this unified display of concern is the tragic incident that took place last Sunday when Biswajit Debnath, a well-known Melaghar businessman, met a gruesome fate, falling victim to a brazen daylight murder within his own shop. Subsequently, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shashi Mohan Debbarma voiced his apprehensions, emphasizing the imperative need to prevent the recurrence of such distressing incidents.

The members of the Melaghar Merchants’ Association have thus taken it upon themselves to not only seek justice for Biswajit Debnath but also to wage a determined battle against the insidious drug trade, affirming their commitment to fostering a safer and drug-free environment for their community.
