Agartala, November 13: A civet cat, a protected species of wild cat, was rescued from an abandoned water tank in Nagicherra area in the peripheries of Agartala city on Monday, after being trapped there for four days. The rescue operation was carried out by Pawsome, an animal welfare organization, with the help of the local people.

Pawsome received the information about the civet cat’s plight from some residents of the area, who heard its cries from the water tank. They rushed to the spot and found the cat struggling to survive in the water. They used a rope and a net to pull the cat out of the tank and wrapped it in a cloth. They then handed over the cat to the forest department staff, who took it to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

Pawsome is a non-governmental organization that has been working for the welfare of animals for nine years. They have rescued and rehabilitated many animals, including dogs, cats, monkeys, snakes, birds, and deer. They have also conducted awareness campaigns and sterilization programs for stray animals.

The civet cat is a nocturnal and omnivorous animal that lives in forests and urban areas. It is also known as the toddy cat, as it is fond of the fermented sap of palm trees. It is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and is listed as a least concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
