Agartala, December 30: A group of mid-day meal workers and helpers in Tripura staged a protest on Saturday, demanding higher wages, annual bonus, pension, and other benefits. The workers, under the banner of Mid-Day Meal Workers and Helpers Welfare Association, Tripura State Committee, submitted a memorandum to the education department, listing their nine-point charter of demands.

The demands include increasing the minimum salary of mid-day meal workers to Rs 18,000 per month, paying them for 12 months instead of 10, giving them annual bonus and monthly salary, regularizing the irregular workers, preventing their retrenchment, introducing pension and provident fund schemes, and providing one-time financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs during retirement.

The workers said that they have been working for the mid-day meal scheme for more than a decade, but they have not received any recognition or benefits from the government. They threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands are not met soon.
