Agartala, 6th January 2024:   A BJP councilor and his neighbor’s houses were set on fire by unidentified miscreants in Kumarghat, on Friday night. The councilor, Toton Das, alleged that the attack was politically motivated and that he had received threats earlier that day.

The incident took place near the Kumarghat subdivision office, where Das is the councilor of Ward No. 7 of the Kumarghat Municipal Council. The miscreants broke into his house and the adjacent house of Bikram Rabi Das and poured petrol and kerosene before setting them ablaze.

The residents of the houses were alerted by the driver and managed to escape. They informed the Kumarghat fire department, which arrived at the scene and doused the flames. However, three houses, including two belonging to Das, were partially burnt in the fire.

Das claimed that he had smelled petrol and kerosene during the fire and that the attack was premeditated. He said that he had been warned by someone on social media that he would be targeted. He accused the opposition parties of being behind the attack and demanded a thorough investigation.

The incident sparked tension in the area and the police have deployed additional forces to maintain law and order. The police have also registered a case and are looking for the culprits. The estimated loss of property is said to be several lakhs of rupees.
