Agartala, 8th February 2024:   The police have arrested Rakesh Roy, the second suspect in the Barjala shooting case, on February 5. Roy was allegedly involved in firing at the house of Shaktipada Pal, a resident of Barjala, on November 2, 2023. The police had earlier arrested Pintu Debnath, another accused in the case, and recovered two bullets of 7.65 mm pistol from Roy’s house.

According to Pal, Roy and Debnath, who belong to the Barjala Manipuri neighborhood, had a previous enmity with him and attacked his house with a pistol. Pal had also reported a bomb thrown at his residence two days before the shooting, which he suspected was done by the same miscreants. The police of New Capital Complex (NCC) police station registered a complaint and launched an investigation into both the incidents.

A police official said that Roy was on the run since the shooting and was finally arrested after a long search. He was kept in police custody for interrogation and was produced in court on Thursday. The official added that the police are trying to find out the motive behind the attacks and the source of the weapons used by the accused.

The Barjala shooting case has created a sense of fear and insecurity among the locals, who have demanded strict action against the culprits and better law and order in the area.
