US Navy approves $80mln deal to finish refueling nuclear aircraft carrier

Huntington Ingalls of Newport News has received an $80 million contract extension from the US Navy to continue and complete work on refueling and overhauling the atomic reactor of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, the Department of Defense announced in a press release.

“Huntington Ingalls Newport News, Virginia is awarded an $80 million …modification …contract for the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) refueling complex overhaul for emergent supplemental work,” the release stated on Friday.

Work on the overhaul will all be performed in Newport News, Virginia, the Defense Department noted.

“Fiscal 2022 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $25 million will be obligated at the time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year,” the release said.

The work will be undertaken by Huntington Ingalls in accordance with 10 US Code 3204(a)(1) under the supervision of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC, the Defense Department said.
