CAA will be insignificant in Assam: Assam Chief Minister

Date:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Thursday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be completely insignificant in Assam.

Addressing a press conference in Dispur, Sarma stated that citizenship will be granted by the central government, emphasizing that the state government has no jurisdiction over the matter. He reiterated that the law about citizenship falls under the authority of the federal government, and said the law is unequivocally clear on this.

He claimed that only a very small number of illegal Bangladeshi Hindus would apply in Assam. Only those who have applied for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) can apply

He said that not a single foreigner who has not applied to the NRC can enter Assam.
