Jail suspension of Bangladeshi ex-PM Zia extended for 6 more months

Date:

The Bangladeshi government has extended the suspension of the jail sentence of ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for another six months.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement in a notice on Wednesday, saying that she can’t leave the country during this period.

It said she would have to seek medical treatment in Bangladesh.

This is the eighth time since 2020 that the government has extended the suspension of Zia’s prison sentence.

On humanitarian grounds following the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the Bangladeshi government decided in March 2020 to temporarily release Zia from jail for six months.

Zia, chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had been in jail since February 2018 after a court sentenced her to seven years over the alleged embezzlement of foreign funds.
