Agartala, 8th May 2024: In a desperate plea for essential services, residents of NC Nagar North Para area in Sonamura sub-division blockaded the Sonamura-Boxanagar road earlier today, citing the dire need for drinking water and electricity.
The agitation stems from a longstanding issue originating six months ago when the electricity transformer in the NC Nagar North Para area malfunctioned. Despite interim measures to provide electricity through alternative means, recent disruptions have left the community without power for the past 10 to 12 days.
The absence of electricity has cascading effects, notably disrupting the supply of drinking water to the area, amplifying the residents’ distress. Efforts to address the situation by approaching the power department yielded no tangible solutions, with officials redirecting the residents to the power corporation office. However, disillusionment awaited the residents at the corporation office as officials conveyed the grim reality: the transformer servicing their area had indeed broken down, necessitating urgent action. Faced with this stark revelation, residents felt compelled to resort to road blockade as a last resort to draw attention to their plight.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a resident expressed the community’s frustration, stating, “We have repeatedly pleaded for the restoration of electricity services in our area, but our appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Today, we are left with no choice but to take to the streets to demand action.” The disruption caused by the road blockade underscores the urgency of addressing the underlying issues of infrastructure maintenance and service provision. As residents await a resolution, the onus lies on the concerned authorities to swiftly intervene and alleviate the suffering of the affected community.
