Agartala, 18th May 2024: The CPIM has initiated a week-long state-level agitation addressing critical issues related to public interest. The demands encompass a wide range of concerns, including employment opportunities, food security, electricity infrastructure upgrades, teacher shortages, irrigation, housing, access to clean drinking water, and urgent repairs of deteriorating roads.
The CPIM on Saturday convened a mass deputation in the district town of Khowai to kick off the protest. The procession, which commenced at the base of Rabindra Murthy in Kabiguru Park, followed various routes before concluding at the same location. The crisis has escalated, drawing attention to several pressing matters:
The Rega and Twep projects, crucial for rural development, are lagging behind schedule, causing concern among citizens. Workers engaged in the Rega program have yet to receive their wages, affecting livelihoods in all three blocks. Despite possessing valid job cards, family members of opposition party workers remain excluded from government employment opportunities. Many panchayats and ADC villages suffer from inadequate access to clean drinking water due to broken irrigation sources and insufficient renovation efforts. Various roads within the sub-division, including those in the district’s main town, are in dire condition, with no visible repair work underway.
Beneficiaries of housing schemes face delays in receiving installments, hindering their ability to construct homes. A shortage of doctors and nurses disrupts medical services at the district hospital. Beneficiaries are not receiving social scheme allowances promptly, impacting vulnerable families. The lack of an effective traffic control system and distressed drainage infrastructure contributes to waterlogging in urban and suburban areas. The ADC (Autonomous District Council) areas lack essential development initiatives.
The CPIM’s week-long agitation aims to draw attention to these critical issues and prompt necessary action from authorities.
