Agartala, 27th May 2024: Cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ has brought significant rainfall to Tripura, with the West district experiencing the highest levels and the North Tripura district the lowest. Despite the heavy rains, there have been no reports of substantial damage or loss of life, although some areas have seen uprooted trees and road blockages.
According to a press release from the Disaster Management under the Revenue Department, Cyclone Remal made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal at around 11:30 PM on Sunday. Currently, the storm is located near Jashore in Bangladesh, approximately 185 km southwest of Agartala, and is moving north-northeast while gradually weakening into a Deep Depression by this evening.
“Due to the impact of the cyclonic storm, Tripura has received an average rainfall of 40.73 mm from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM today. The highest rainfall was recorded in West Tripura district at 59.5 mm, and the lowest in North Tripura district at 27 mm. The strongest wind gust, recorded at 3:30 PM, reached 53.7 kmph at A D Nagar, West Tripura,” the report stated.
The release highlighted that no substantial damage or loss of life has been reported from any district, aside from some uprooted trees and road blockages in a few places.
“Disaster Management teams, SDRF, trained Aapda Mitra and Civil Defence Volunteers, and NDRF have been mobilized to clear roads and restore essential services. In most areas, roads were cleared within a few hours. Damage assessments are ongoing in many locations. The IMD has issued Red and Orange Alerts for today and tomorrow, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall in isolated places across the state,” the statement read.
Emergency Operation Centres are operating round the clock, with NDRF, SDRF, trained volunteers, and departmental quick response teams on high alert.
“One NDRF team has been strategically relocated closer to the cyclonic zone. Various departments, including power, health, education, transport, PWD, forest, and food, along with ground-level functionaries, are coordinating effectively with the District Administration. Volunteers remain vigilant, ready to take immediate response measures to mitigate any impact of the cyclone. Hospitals and health sub-centres are prepared to address any health needs. Relief and Rehabilitation Centres are ready to shelter people if necessary,” the statement added.
