Agartala, 28th June 2024: Five individuals were arrested after they attacked police officers and vandalized their vehicles following a protest over a fatal accident in Chelikhola village, Bishalgarh sub-division late Thursday night. The incident involved a suspected vehicle reportedly smuggling sugar that killed one person and injured another.
Officer-In-Charge of Bishalgarh Police Station, Rana Chatterjee, explained that a 24-year-old man, Bishu Lodh, died when a Bolero vehicle allegedly carrying sugar struck him while he was on a bike with a friend, who sustained severe injuries. In response, local residents protested, demanding the immediate arrest of the driver and the seizure of the vehicle.
“During our efforts to control the situation and after detaining the involved vehicle, a section of the protestors turned unruly, pelting stones at the police, setting a police vehicle on fire, and damaging three other vehicles,” said Chatterjee.
The police have arrested five individuals involved in the violence, but the main suspect responsible for the accident remains at large. “We are actively searching for him and will present the arrested individuals in court seeking police remand,” Chatterjee added.
Bishalgarh Legislative Assembly MLA, Sushanta Deb, visited the scene shortly after the incident. He instructed the police to take strict action against those involved in the attacks and to implement measures to curb sugar smuggling.
