Statistics Day celebrated in Tripura: Minister Bikash Debbarma inaugurates event honoring Father of Modern Statistics

Agartala, 29th June 2024:  The Department of Finance and Statistics in Tripura played a pivotal role in commemorating Statistics Day celebrating the birth anniversary of the renowned statistician Professor Prashanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Statistics minister Bikash Debbarma emphasized the critical role of data collection and dissemination in planning and implementation during the event held at Hall No. 2 of the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here.

In his address, Minister Debbarma highlighted the ongoing efforts to modernize the statistics department, including the construction of a new office building. Currently, the Statistics Department operates in four districts of the state, but plans are underway to establish offices in other districts as well. The minister paid tribute to Professor Mahalanobis, recognizing his visionary planning approach and significant contributions to the field of statistics. This year’s Statistics Day theme focuses on the ‘Use of Data for Decision Making.’

As part of the celebrations, a blood donation camp was organized, with 34 officers and employees from the department participating. Abhishek Chandra, Special Secretary of the Department of Finance and Statistics, presented various programs through a detailed PowerPoint presentation. Census Officer Ravindra Reang discussed the importance of census data, while Additional Director Arup Kumar Chanda addressed the audience. Director Devanand Riang expressed gratitude on behalf of the department.

In a special moment, Minister Debbarma unveiled two books: the ‘NSS Report Book on Debt and Investment’ and the ‘NSS Report Book on Household Social Consumption on Health in Tripura.’ The ceremony began with guests paying their respects to Professor Prashanta Chandra Mahalabish by placing wreaths at his portrait.
