CPIM MLA slams govt over neglect of tea garden workers’ welfare

Agartala, 4th July 2024:   Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition and MLA, voiced strong criticism against the government on Thursday for its failure to improve the welfare and development of tea garden workers. His remarks came after a visit to Mekhlipara Tea Garden in the West District, where two individuals tragically lost their lives following the collapse of a mud wall in their home early Wednesday morning.

During a press briefing, Chaudhury accused the government of engaging in mere rhetoric over the past six years without delivering any tangible benefits to tea workers or the tea industry. “Despite numerous promises, there has been no real progress on the ground. Tea garden workers continue to live in inadequate housing, much of which dates back to the Left Front government era. These structures are in dire need of maintenance and replacement, yet no action has been taken,” stated the CPIM MLA.

Chaudhury described the tragic incident, explaining that heavy rain had caused part of a mud wall to collapse, resulting in one person dying instantly and another succumbing to injuries on the way to the hospital. He mentioned that a four-month-old child is currently in the ICU with a skull fracture, receiving medical care. He also noted that the District Magistrate (DM) and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) visited the site and provided assistance.

The CPIM leader further criticized the BJP government, alleging that despite announcing various schemes for the welfare and development of tea garden workers, including land allocation, housing, and wage increases, none of these promises have been fulfilled.
